The Lake Lure Classical Academy is a Challenge Foundation Academy that is a tuition-free public charter school that is open to all North Carolina Students. Lake Lure Classical opened in the fall of 2010 and offers Kindergarten through 12th grade.  The high school program is focused on college-preparatory curriculum with an emphasis on critical thinking, self-motivated learning, and developing active citizenship. There are a total of 19 schools in the Challenge Foundation Academy program, 14 of those are located in North Carolina.

Executive Director of LLCA gave a welcoming commencement speech directed at students and visitors before Linda Turner, a Board Chair at LLCA gave a history of the gym at Lake Lure, or lack thereof. LLCA sports and recreational programs have used outdoor facilities since the school started in 2010. This new gym will offer many of the sports programs to host a home game for the first time. LLCA has come a long way since 2010 when it was operating primarily out of mobile classrooms.
