Cardinals take on AA Track & Field State Championship

LHS boys take second 

 

COLUMBIA—Over the weekend the Cardinals went on the road to Spring Valley High School in Columbia South Carolina to compete in the AA Track and Field State Championship. The Cardinals competed in both the men and women’s State Championship.  

The men’s team had several stand out athletes over the weekend. Senior Miccoa Price was the 100meter dash State Champion with a time of 10.79 seconds as well as placing seventh in the Triple Jump with a mark of 42 feet 5 inches. Senior Kane Duncan claimed his place as the State Champion in the 200meter dash throwing down a time of 49.80 seconds as well as finishing in eighth place in the 800meter run with a time of 2:46.21. Senior Johnathan Alviar put in an impressive performance in the 1600meter run with a time of 4:46.32 earning him a fifth place finish. Senior Blake Mace attacked the 400meter hurdles running a time of 1:03.42 putting him in seventh place. Sophomore Clay Simpson placed sixth place in the discus throw with a mark of 130 feet 1 inch, Simpson was one of the two underclassmen in the event, only being beaten by juniors and seniors. 

The relay teams were the biggest cumulative point scorers for the men’s teamThe 4x100meter relay team finished on the podium, taking third place with a time of 43.52 seconds. The 4x400meter relay hit a time of 3:23.27, which saw them be named State Champions in the event while also beating the next closest team by over three full seconds. The distance crew also put in a solid shift in the 4x800meter relay in which the Cardinals finished second with a time of 8:34.35. 

The Cardinals scored a total of 57 points at the State Championship, putting them into joint second place, tied with Philip Simmons High School. St. Josephs Catholic School won the AA Men’s Track and Field State Championship with a total of 70 points. The Cardinals scored the most points off of the relay events while Miccoa Price and Kane Duncan claimed individual honors by being named State Champions in the 100m dash and 400m dash respectively. 

The lady Cardinals took to the track and put in several good performances over the weekend. Junior Alexus Atkins ran the 1600meter (one mile) run, in a time of 5:44.22 earning a fifth place finish, Atkins was even more successful in the 3200meter (two mile) run, finishing in second place with an impressive time of 12:03.73. Senior Ashley Blanton took seventh place in the 1600meter run with a time of 5:57.28. Senior Kaitlyn Painter threw 101feet 4 inches in the discus throw to take seventh place.  

The lady Cardinals took podium position in the 4x800meter relay taking third place with a time of 10:24.63. The lady Cardinals scored a total of 22 points, putting them in 11th place in the AA State Championship. Woodland High School from the lower state claimed the girls State Championship with a total of 113.5 points.  

Brett Morley, Head Coach of the men and women’s teams gave praise to the boys and girls for their performances over the weekend. “Landrum High School is extremely proud of the boys and girls track teams that went to compete at the state championship at Spring Valley High School this past Saturday,” Coach Morley said. “The girls finished in a very hard fought 11th place and the boys earned state runner-up honors with an impressive score of 57 points over their competition.”
