Columbus, NC—Ouida George, 96, passed away on the morning of April 22, 2019 at Ridge Rest in Columbus, NC. 

Ouida was the beloved wife of Joseph E. George (deceased) for fifty-four years and the youngest daughter of John B. Sumerall and Dolly Prine Sumerall of Ovett, Mississippi. She is survived by her daughter Brenda G. Whelchel and her husband Bruce. Additionally, three grandchildren, Allison Snyder (John), Wade Whelchel (Stephanie) and Andrew Whelchel survive. Six great-grandchildren, Spencer, Quincy, and Jillian Snyder and Zeb, Wren, and Josiah Whelchel survive as well. 

Most of Ouida’s adult life was spent in Spartanburg, SC. She owned and operated a beauty salon there for over thirty years. She was an avid gardener and watercolorist. Ouida always relaxed best with a fishing pole in her hand. 

Her family is forever grateful for the staff and residents at Ridge Rest for the loving care they showed her the last six years. Truly, there is a balm in Gilead.

A memorial service will be held at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, NC at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2019.
