For a roster mixed with talent and inexperience, there will be some days such as Monday for Polk County Middle’s baseball squad. 

Hendersonville Middle took advantage of a handful of Polk miscues to notch a 12-1 win in the Wolverines’ home opener at Polk County Recreation Complex. 

The Wolverines (1-1) had just four hits, but still trailed just 3-1 after three innings. But Hendersonville pushed across four runs in the fourth on just two hits, taking advantage of a hit batter, an error and two walks. 

The Bearcats added five runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. 

“We’re a good team. We’ve got to work on not beating ourselves,” said Polk Middle head coach Kenny Hall, who has just two eighth graders on this year’s roster. “That’s going to come as the season goes along. 

“It was our first home game, not that that’s an excuse. But with so many new kids who were not on the team last year, it’s a new experience, and I’m sure they felt a little nervous.” 

Polk scored its only run in the bottom of the third as Evan Jones reached on an error, moved to second on Alex Tipton’s sacrifice and scored on Angus Weaver’s single. 

Weaver finished 2-for-2 with an RBI and two stolen bases for Polk County, which also got hits from Tipton and Gunnar Alm. 

The Wolverines are back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Canton Middle for a 4:30 p.m. matchup.
