Gavin Bright and David Sessoms teamed on a two-hitter Wednesday as East Rutherford handed Polk County a 9-0 setback in the Wolverines’ season opener in Forest City.
Bright pitched six innings, allowing singles to Sedrick Pickett and Kyler Scruggs. He struck out eight and walked four as the Cavaliers improved to 2-0. Sessoms struck out the side in the seventh to close the win.
Polk County used four pitchers in taking the field against an opponent for the first time this season. The Wolverines allowed just five hits, but had five walks and committed six errors.
East led 1-0 after three innings, but scored two runs in the fourth, then four in the fifth to take command of the game.
The Wolverines are set to travel Saturday to Wilkes County to take part in the Blackhawk B.E.S.T. tournament. Polk will face Ashe County and West Iredell in back-to-back games beginning at noon.
