Pacolet River, Greater Landrum and Landrum Rail History Museum are options

LANDRUM — The city of Landrum is seeking the public’s input on naming its new rail car that will soon be a railroad museum.

Landrum received the historic Pullman rail car in August that now sits near the Landrum Depot on North Trade Avenue. Work will begin soon to restore the rail car and turn it into a railway museum.

A museum committee has suggested three possibilities for the name of the rail car, including the Pacolet River Rail & History Museum, Greater Landrum Rail & History Museum and Landrum Rail & History Museum.

Landrum City Councilman Billy Inman said the exterior of the rail car will be cleaned this summer and restoration to turn it into a museum will occur after that. The rail car is 800-square feet.

“The city is excited to begin the process of renovations to our historic Pullman Sleeper Car and Museum,” Inman said.

He also said the Spartanburg County Foundation is accepting donations to go towards the restoration of the rail car for a museum.

Landrum is working with the University of South Carolina graduate program to tell the story on the railroad.

The museum will have information on how the railroad came to the area. The Pullman rail car was built in 1949 for the Southern Railway, and was donated to Landrum by Ken Oosting.

Anyone who wishes to vote on what the museum should be named can do so on Landrum’s Facebook page or call city hall at 864-457-3000.
