Fourth-ranked Avery powers past Polk girls

Heaven Nelson scored 23 points Friday to lead fourth-ranked Avery to a 78-39 win over Polk County in Western Highlands Conference girls basketball play in Newland.

The Vikings (15-4, 6-1), No. 4 in this week’s NCPreps/High School Media 1A Basketball Poll, raced to a 45-20 lead at halftime, with Nelson and Faith Daniels powering the first-half surge. Daniels finished with 19 points.

Olivia Overholt led Polk County (6-10, 0-6) with 17 points, with Sara Muse and Marissa Twitty each scoring six. Tori Thompson had four points, with Mariah Overholt and Rachael Davis each finishing with three.

Polk County is slated to host T.C. Roberson on Monday in non-conference play. That game will begin at 6 p.m.
