Polk seeks information on killed horse

Animal shot on John Weaver Road sometime Thursday

GREEN CREEK — The Polk County Sheriff’s Office is seeking any information on a horse that was shot along John Weaver Road in Green Creek sometime the morning of Thursday, Jan. 17.

Owner Anne Baskett found her 3-year old bay warmblook mare dead in a pasture. Baskett lives at 744 John Weaver Road.

The horse was found deceased early in the morning.

The horse was sent to the Western Carolina Diagnostic Laboratory for a necropsy, where it was discovered the horse was shot in the heart by a .22-caliber rifle.

It is believed the horse was shot between midnight and 6 a.m. Thursday.

The horse was located in a pasture that borders John Smith Road.
