Polk County’s successful fall sports season has earned the Wolverine athletic program the top spot in the Wells Fargo Conference Cup standings for the Western Highlands Conference.

Polk County holds the WHC lead in the competition, which recognizes the top all-around athletic program, by four points over Mountain Heritage and Owen. The Wolverines won conference titles in volleyball and girls tennis and placed second in boys soccer and girls cross- country.

Mountain Heritage took top honors in football and girls golf, while Owen won boys soccer and boys and girls cross country.

Conference Standings: Polk County 65, Mountain Heritage 61, Owen 61, Avery County 58.5, Madison 32.5, Mitchell 30.

The Wells Fargo Conference Cup is a companion to the Wells Fargo Cup, which recognizes schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performances within individual conferences. Wachovia, and now Wells Fargo, has sponsored the conference awards program since 1980.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points.
