Brevard Middle showed in the second half Monday why the Blue Devils are one of the top teams this season in the Blue Ridge Athletic Conference.

Polk County Middle showed why in the first half that the Wolverines may have a say in that designation next season.

Polk Middle nearly battled Brevard on even terms in the first half until the Blue Devils cranked up their offense in the second and ran away to a 44-13 win in the Wolverines’ regular-season home finale.

A young Polk County squad (2-9) led early in the game, fell behind 12-7 and then pulled within 12-11 late in the second period as Kayleigh Wilson scored on a layup and Ada Kelley turned an offensive rebounds into a basket.

But Brevard held the Wolverines to just two points in the second half, steadily pulling away as shots would not fall for Polk.

“I’m really happy with them and how we played the first half,” said Polk County head coach Brian Taylor. “That’s the best time on our side of the [conference], and we were right there with them.

“They showed the second half that they’re a better team. They outhustled and outplayed us. They knocked down some shots that they missed in the first half.”

For a young Polk County team with just one eighth-grader, Wilson, the game served as a lesson that will help next season.

“We’re still getting better,” Taylor said. “It was just a story of two different halves.”

Wilson had four points for Polk, with Caroline Taylor scoring three and Brianna Gray, Paige Griffin and Kelley each adding two.

The Wolverines will wrap up their season on Thursday at Rugby.
