Avery cranked up its defensive pressure and used its advantage on the boards to help fuel a 60-29 win Tuesday over Polk County in a Western Highlands Conference matchup at Polk.

The Vikings (11-2, 2-0) took command of the game late in the first period, closing with seven straight points for a 16-11 edge. Avery then raced to a 31-15 halftime lead, forcing several turnovers and limiting Polk County (5-5, 0-2) to one shot on most possessions.

The Wolverines more than held their own throughout much of the first quarter, taking an 11-9 lead with 1:42 left on an Olivia Overholt 3-pointer from the top of the key. But turnovers and rebounding against Avery’s senior-laden squad ultimately proved Polk’s downfall.

Kristen Hall had 10 points and six rebounds to lead Polk, with Overholt adding seven. Tori Thompson, Emmie McDowell, Ansley Lynch, Marissa Twitty, Mariah Overholt and Makayla Staley each had two points, with Twitty also grabbing six rebounds.

Polk County will step out of conference play on Thursday, traveling to Piedmont Community Charter before returning home Friday to host Mitchell in another WHC matchup. That will be the first of four straight home games for Polk.
