Warhorses run past Wolverine boys basketball team in league opener

Owen built a 17-point halftime lead Friday and went on to hand Polk County a 56-31 setback in Western Highlands Conference boys basketball action in Swannanoa.

The Wolverines (0-9, 0-1) trailed 12-9 late in the first period before Owen (3-7, 1-0) began to pull away. The Warhorses had a 13-2 run to take a 25-11 lead in the second period and closed with a 30-13 lead at the half.

The Warhorses extended the margin to 47-15 at the end of the third period.

Tyler Staley led Polk County with 10 points, with Dominique Carson and Amir Gary each scoring six. Qualon Sutton finished with five and Mitchell Yoder and Javontae Miller each added two.

Polk County played its second straight game without leading scorer Clark Phipps, sidelined with an injury.

Polk County returns home Tuesday for a key WHC matchup with 1A foe Avery.
