Romantic comedy set in Barcelona to be screened at TFAC Tuesday

The romantic comedy “Vicky Cristina Barcelona” will be shown at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Tryon Fine Arts Center.

Centered in Barcelona, Spain, “Vicky Christina Barcelona” continues the current TFAC “Destinations” films series with an escape from winter to summertime in this historic Mediterranean city, with dramatic architecture and a lively cultural atmosphere.  As the title suggests, the city of Barcelona almost takes on the role of a character in the film.

The story’s premise is not an uncommon idea in a Woody Allen film: two attractive American women from New York decide to spend the summer in Barcelona, and, well, one thing leads to another, but there are enough twists and turns to keep the audience guessing, screening organizers said.

The cast includes Rebecca Hall as Vicky, Scarlett Johansson as Cristina, Penelope Cruz as Maria Elena and Javier Bardem as Juan Antonio.

Cruz won numerous awards for best supporting actress, and Woody Allen won the Independent Spirit Award for best screenplay. The screenplay was also nominated for the Writers Guild of America. The movie won the Golden Globe Award for best motion picture, musical or comedy.

Film critic Roger Ebert summed up his review by saying: “The actors are attractive, the city is magnificent, the love scenes don’t get all sweaty and everybody finishes the summer a little wiser and with a lifetime of memories. What more could you ask?”

Note that the next film in the series, “In Bruges,” will be screened on Tuesday, Jan. 29.

The box office opens 6:15 p.m. for refreshments and socializing.
