The periods of consistent play are starting to become more common, but the one thing that Polk County head boys basketball coach Lemont Jones would like most right now is time.

A 6-4 post player like Piedmont Charter’s Jaylen Prioleau wouldn’t hurt, either.

Prioleau scored 21 points Tuesday to help lead the Patriots to a 79-54 victory over the Wolverines in nonconference basketball action at Polk.

Piedmont Charter (8-1) took command of the game midway through the second period, hitting three straight 3-pointers to kick off a 15-0 run and turn a six-point lead into a 21-point bulge.

Amir Gary finally stopped the streak with a 3-pointer with 24 seconds left in the half, but the Patriots still took a 42-23 lead at the break.

“Some things need to get a lot better in terms of the basics,” Jones said. “It’s going to take a while. I did see some good things from our late bloomers that have come out. Our football guys got a chance to play and did better than I expected. They’re going to put some pressure on the starters, which I think will help us out.”

Clark Phipps scored 23 points to lead the Wolverines (0-8), who also received eight points from Gary, six from Tyler Staley, five from Mitchell Yoder, four each from Sedric Pickett and Ezeikel Hermann, and two from Dominique Carson and Qualon Sutton.

Jones looks forward to the upcoming Christmas break in order to get some added practice time with the squad.

“Hopefully over Christmas we can get a little better, get everyone on the same page. We’re still trying to find each other,” he said. “Maybe that will get us ready for conference play. We’ve just got to do the little things.”
