Polk County’s girls basketball team moved above the .500 mark for the first time in almost three years, doing so Wednesday with a 54-14 rout of Highland Tech in Gastonia.
The Wolverines improved to 3-2 with the win, matching their win total for the past two seasons. It is the first time Polk County has been above the .500 level since Dec. 30, 2015.
Freshman Olivia Overholt led a balanced Polk attack with 13 points and added five steals. Kristen Hall had eight points and five rebounds while Marissa Twitty scored seven points and Sara Muse, Mariah Overholt and Emmie McDowell each added six points. Muse also had five steals.
Rachael Davis, Jen Guerrero, Makalya Staley, Amy Chupp and Kaylin Jenkins each scored two points, with Staley hauling down seven rebounds.
Polk County took a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter, then built that to a 23-4 advantage at the break.
The Wolverines will return home Friday to face East Henderson in another nonconference matchup.
