The streak is over.
Polk County Middle won its first wrestling match in almost five years on Wednesday, defeating Madison Middle 52-48 in Marshall.
The Wolverines dominated the middle weights to earn the win in the season-opening Blue Ridge Conference match for both schools.
Polk Middle’s last victory came on January 23, 2014, the final match of that season, when the Wolverines defeated Bethel Middle 58-42.
“Not gonna have to wait four years to get another one,” said Polk Middle head coach Jerry Cox. “It’s a group of amazing kids who fought hard.”
Polk Middle trailed 24-6 and 36-12 early in the match, but began to rally with Brayden Gartzman’s win by fall at 113.
The Wolverines won five of the final six matches, with Angus Weaver’s forfeit win at 170 clinching the win for Polk Middle. The Wolverines picked up a key decision at 160, with Kole Powell scoring an 11-2 victory that enabled Weaver’s forfeit to seal the win.
The Wolverines — who are also coached by Phillip Miller, Jeremy Miller and Christian Arrowood — travel Thursday to Apple Valley for another BRC match.
