Wolverines drop tough 1-0 loss at Owen in regular-season soccer finale

Owen eked out a hard-fought 1-0 win over Polk County on Monday in Swannanoa to clinch the Western Highlands Conference boys soccer championship.

The Warhorses scored in the 35th minute and kept the Wolverines at bay to end the season with a 14-4 record, including 10-0 in WHC play. Polk County ends its regular season at 12-10-1, 8-2.

Wyatt Lehman scored what proved to be the game-winning goal off a corner kick.

“Both sides played well,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “At the end of the night, we just got unlucky when they scored off the corner kick.

“Very proud of the way my team played tonight. And I believe even though we lost tonight, we still gained momentum going into the playoffs.”

Jonah Wyatt had four saves for Polk County as Owen outshot the Wolverines 11-8.

Polk County will enter the playoffs as the top 1A seed from the WHC and will could earn a first-round home game when the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announces playoff pairings on Wednesday. The first round of the state 1A playoffs is set for Saturday.

The Polk County junior varsity ended its season with a 3-2 win. in Swannanoa. Wylie Rauschenbach, Joe Butts and Alan Mejia all scored goals for Polk County, which ended its season with a 5-9 record.
