Polk County senior claims 1A West Regional tennis title

Polk County senior Hannah Jenne captured the 1A West Regional singles tennis title, claiming the championship Saturday in Elkin.

Jenne defeated second-seeded Leah Nance, of East Wilkes, 7-5, 6-1 to take home the regional championship.

The win sends Jenne to next week’s state 1A championship as the top seed from the West. Jenne will meet the No. 4 seed from the East in the opening round of play on Friday at Cary Tennis Park in Cary.

Jenne’s road to the title began on Friday, when she defeated South Stanly’s Jacy Noble 6-0, 6-0 in the opening round. Jenne then knocked off Thomas Jefferson’s Kristen Husen 6-2, 7-5 to reach the semifinals and clinch a state berth.

Jenne returned to the court Saturday and defeated the regional’s top seed, Emma Bost, of Gray Stone Day, 6-4, 6-1 to earn her spot in the regional final.

Jenne, Nance, Bost and Pine Lake Prep’s Anderson Schubert qualified for the state meet from the regional.

Polk County’s doubles team of Tana Harris and Julia Griffin won their opening regional match, defeating Highland Tech’s Maddie Van Meter and Annabelle Pearson 7-5, 6-1, but fell in the second round to Pine Lake Prep’s Grace Kuechler and Sophia Taffet 6-2, 6-2.

Kuechler and Taffet reached the regional final before falling 6-4, 6-2 to East Surry’s Abigail Martin and Sarah Mann, the top seed.
