As Polk County’s girls golf coach, Ty Stott enjoyed the effort of his lone team member in the recent Western Highlands Conference golf tournament.

As the father of senior Morgan Stott, Dad was pretty proud as well.

Morgan Stott ended her Wolverine golf career with a fourth-place showing at the WHC tourney, held at Mountain Glen Golf Club near Boone. That finish earned Stott all-conference honors for the second consecutive season.

Stott opened play in the tournament with a 50 on the front nine, putting her in second place and just two shots behind eventual winner Ellie Pittman, of Avery. The back nine at Mountain Glen plays much harder than the front, and Stott posted a 65 to card a 115 for the day.

Stott improved upon her pre-tournament practice round by 11 strokes.

“She saved her best for last,” Ty said. “She wanted to make all-conference and she really picked it up. She went to the driving range, she had lessons with [Tryon Country Club pro Gerald Weathers], she went to a par-three course the day before the conference match to work on her short game.”

Unlike most other sports, where all-conference teams are chosen by coaches, the WHC tournament determines those honorees, with the top six players receiving that designation.

Ty Stott credited Weathers and Tryon chiropractor James Baker for helping Morgan Stott be in that group.

“Dr. Baker, I wish more people know what he can do for an athlete,” Ty said. “He made a huge difference. Gerald Weathers is an absolutely great instructor. What a difference he made in Morgan.”
