PCMS students get insights into dealing with pesky plants

Students in Rowann Hoy’s sixth-grade science classes at Polk County Middle School have been learning that plants have behaviors that help them survive.

To wrap up the unit, Hoy invited Max Howes, of Conserving Carolina, to teach students how to identify and eradicate invasive plants, as they know all too well how to survive in the environment. The lesson included taking students on a scavenger hunt on the trail behind the school to identify the six invasive species that can be found thriving there.

Howes also brought in some of his tools and showed students how to dig up a kudzu crown, the only certain way to kill the plant.

Students interested in helping the community further eradicate invasive species were encouraged to visit the Conserving Carolina website.
