Polk County bounced back Monday from an early deficit to top Madison 3-1 in a Western Highlands Conference boys soccer match in Marshall.

With their fourth straight victory, the Wolverines reached the .500 mark for the first time this season at 8-8-1, with a 4-1 record in conference play. Polk County is now all alone in second place in the WHC.

After giving up an early goal, Polk County evened the match as defender Clark Phipps played a long pass to Isaac Edwards, who beat the Madison defense and scored on a breakaway to tie things up.

Polk then grabbed a 2-1 lead moments later on a corner kick, with Grayson Jones’ header deflected by a defender to Polk’s Matias Akers, who drilled a shot into the net to give the Wolverines the lead.

A Madison foul in the second half led to a penalty kick for Jesus Avellaneda, who converted for the final margin.

“I am super proud of my team. This has to be my favorite game,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “I saw my team work together, passing, moving, defending as a unit, coming to attack and the composure on the ball was fantastic.

“We definitely played world class tonight.”

Polk County will travel to Owen on Wednesday for a huge WHC match with the league-leading Warhorses.
