His first season as Polk County’s wrestling coach has yet to begin, but Adam Dedmon is already hard at work on the sport’s future in the area.

Dedmon and fellow coach Russell Wilson are starting a youth wrestling club in Polk County. The group is designed for students in kindergarten through sixth grade, and no experience with the sport is required.

Organizational meetings for the club will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 23 and Oct. 30 in the Polk County High School cafeteria.

“I think this is going to be a great thing for our program here at Polk County,” Dedmon said. “This is going to help our program grow and will especially help feed the program at the middle school and then the high school.”

The club plans to begin holding practices in November at PCHS from 6:15-7:15 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays.

Team members will take part in tournaments around the area. Wilson noted that participants in those tournaments are grouped by age, weight and experience.

“Everybody gets to play,” he said. “We’re trying to get kids excited.”

Dedmon, who was involved with a similar club while the head coach at Chase, said that wrestling has benefits beyond competing on the mat.

“We’re a foundational sport,” he said. “So it’s good for every other sport.”
