Such was Wednesday’s Western Highlands Conference boys soccer match in G.M. Tennant Stadium, where Polk County posted a 3-0 win over visiting Mountain Heritage.

The Wolverines (7-8-1, 3-1) scored twice in the first 10 minutes, then largely settled into a match played between the penalty areas with the Cougars (2-5, 1-2).

Isaac Edwards gave Polk a lead in the fourth minute, rocketing home a shot from inside the penalty area.

Jordan Wyatt followed in the 10th minute with a laser-like drive from more than 20 yards out, his blast from the right-wing, dipping into the left corner of the net, giving Polk a 2-0 edge.

But the Wolverines would not score again until the final 30 seconds of the match, when Grayson Jones shook free from a Mountain Heritage defender and drove a hard shot from some 10 yards out to end the scoring.

Jones, Edwards and Sean Hudson notched assists for Polk.

The Wolverine defense, anchored by senior Clark Phipps, largely made it a quiet night for Polk goalkeeper Jonah Wyatt, the senior making a handful of saves.

Polk County will return to the pitch on Monday, traveling to Madison to face the Patriots in a WHC match.
