Two Polk cross-country athletes take top spots at Armentrout Invitational

Polk County’s cross-country teams swept top individual honors Tuesday at the Armentrout Invitational meet in Rutherfordton.

Freshman Olivia Overholt won the girls race while senior Caleb Potter easily won the boys race in the meet held on R-S Central’s cross-country course.

Overholt’s victory in a time of 22:22.85 helped carry the Polk girls to a second-place finish in the 12-team field. Hendersonville won the girls race with 34 points, followed by Polk County (85) and R-S Central (109).

Caelan Gaul (26:16.79), Amelia Nespaca (26:33.20) and Taytem Johnson (26:41.51) finished 19th, 20th and 21st, with Lauren Dotson taking 34th in 27:46.72.

Also competing for the Wolverines were:

• Izzy Jackson, 27:56.32

• Madison Geddings, 28:11.61

• Maia Teague, 29:30.04

• Ashlyn Ramsey, 29:37.05

• Lacey Gosnell, 31:32.25

• Nathalie Ramirez, 34:39.05

• Scout Harmon, 32:42.60

• Julianna Robbins, 34:43.01

Potter finished the course in 17:40.04, some 31 seconds ahead of R-S Central’s Christopher Upton. Polk’s Jack Derkach finished 16th in 20:21.02 while teammate Mark Teague was 18th in 20:31.72.

Chris Rickman (22:54.88) and Bryce Thompson (22:55.39) rounded out the scoring for the Wolverines. Also competing were:

• Kiyon Staley, 25:06.16

The Wolverines were fourth in the nine-team field, won by North Henderson. Hendersonville and R-S Central rounded out the top three.
