On-target Wolverines romp past Rugby, 5-1

Polk County Middle’s 1-0 overtime win Thursday at Brevard Middle left head coach Lennox Charles convinced that the Wolverines needed some target practice.

Too many missed opportunities, despite the victory, Charles felt.

So Polk Middle spent Friday’s practice largely just taking shots on goal — point-blank range and beyond.

It must have been a pretty good practice.

Polk Middle raced to a 5-0 lead in the first half Monday, and went on to hand Rugby Middle a 5-1 defeat in Blue Ridge Conference boys soccer action at Utz Field.

The Wolverines (5-2, 3-2) got their first goal less than five minutes into the match and were never really threatened thereafter, building the five-goal advantage by intermission.

“[Polk Middle assistant coach Stephanie Luedi] said, ‘well, you finally did shooting practice and look what happened,’” Charles said. “We played well.”

Elliot Whiteside scored that first goal, with Evan Jones adding back-to-back goals some seven minutes later. The latter of those tallies came on a nice serve by Whiteside from the left wing into the penalty area, with Jones spinning and hitting a shot into the back of the net.

Manny Albarran scored on a drive from near the top of the box with 3:16 left in the half and Keaundrae Green capped the scoring with 1:30 remaining, poking in a loose ball after a scramble in front of the goal.

Entering the second half of their regular season, the Wolverines now have a week off, returning to action on Monday at Apple Valley.
