Wolverine walk-off: Polk Middle again wins on game’s final play

There may be something special brewing this season around Polk County Middle School’s football program.
The Wolverines certainly have developed a flair for the dramatic.
For the second straight week, Polk Middle engineered a walk-off victory. Angus Weaver scored on the final play of the game Thursday to lift Polk Middle to a 28-24 win over Brevard in Blue Ridge Conference action at Utz Field.
With time running out, Brevard in possession of the ball deep in its territory and leading 24-22, Weaver forced a Blue Devil turnover, the Wolverines recovering at the 4-yard line.
Weaver gained 3 yards on Polk’s first play, then barreled into the end zone with no time remaining for the winning score.
Polk County Middle improved to 3-0 with the win. Brevard dropped to 0-3.
The Wolverines grabbed an 8-0 lead in the first half, as Casey Beiler tossed an 18-yard touchdown pass to Angel Alvarez, with Weaver adding the 2-point conversion.
Brevard Middle answered to make it 8-8, but Polk Middle immediately retook the lead as Vincent Twitty returned the ensuing kickoff 71 yards. The extra point failed, leaving the score at 14-8.
Polk County recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and drove to the end zone, with Weaver scoring from the 3 yard line to make it 22-8.
Brevard rallied to take a 24-22 lead, setting the stage for Weaver’s late-game heroics.
The Wolverines will travel to Apple Valley on Thursday for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
