Polk Middle’s football team delivered some kind of ending Thursday.
Angus Weaver caught a 25-yard touchdown pass from Casey Beiler with no time left on the clock to lift the Wolverines to a 36-30 victory over Canton Middle in a Blue Ridge Conference matchup at Pisgah Memorial Stadium.
Weaver’s winning grab capped a wild game in which three touchdowns were scored in the final 2:30, including the game-winner.
Canton Middle raced to a 16-0 lead in the first half, but Polk Middle answered late in the second quarter as Beiler tossed a touchdown pass to Antonio Simpson. Weaver added the 2-point conversion to make it 16-8 at the half.
The Wolverines then tied the game early in the third quarter as Weaver broke free for a long touchdown run, then added the 2-point conversion. Canton responded with a score to make it 24-22, but Makus Simpson had a lengthy scoring run and Weaver added the 2-point conversion to give Polk County a 24-22 lead.
Polk County’s Colton Bradley recovered an onsides kick on the ensuing kickoff, and the Wolverines scored again on a Weaver touchdown run to take a 30-22 lead with 2:30 left in the game.
Canton Middle, though, fashioned a scoring drive to tie the game with 17 seconds left.
The Bears attempted an onsides kick, but Simpson recovered to give the Wolverines good field position. Beiler hit Simpson for a pass to the Canton 25, with the Wolverines calling timeout with 0.6 seconds remaining. Weaver then caught the game-winner on the next play.
Polk County next will host Brevard Middle on Thursday at 5 p.m.
