Board agrees to rent out campground for WEG

TRYON — Anyone with a recreational vehicle will have a chance to stay at Harmon Field during the upcoming World Equestrian Games.

The Harmon Field Board of Supervisors met Tuesday and heard from Supervisor Travis Aldred, who said he was asked if the campsites could be rented out for WEG.

“There is electric and water, but no sewer,” Aldred said.

Aldred said the man who requested the sites said his vehicle could hold the sewer without needing to dump it, and also said he had more people he could bring to stay.

“We could charge them a daily fee or a weekly fee,” Aldred said. “I would vote daily.”

Board members were not sure what to charge for the campsites. Harmon Field has campsites near the maintenance shed, which was formally used for cookers during the annual Blue Ridge Barbecue Festival, which is no longer held.

Aldred said the area has enough room for about 80 campers in the campsite area.

Aldred agreed to call local campgrounds to see what they are going to charge for camping during WEG.

WEG is scheduled to begin Tuesday with opening ceremonies, and conclude on Sept. 23.

The board members agreed to accept as many campers as they can get, and settled on charging $100 per night per camper.

Aldred said he would leave trashcans out for any campers who stay, and will check the grounds every day during their stays and would also collect the fees for Harmon Field.
