Col. John (Jack) J. Daunt Jr., retired U.S. Air Force

Published 7:02 pm Wednesday, August 15, 2018

Born in Boston on April 23, 1918, Jack attended Boston Latin School and Holy Cross College on a full debating scholarship, and obtained a law degree from Boston College.

But he seemed most proud of being one of Big Brother Bob Emory’s Radio Rascals as a tap dancer.

In the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was in the Ferry Command, and flew the hump in the Burma/China Theater. When the Air Force was being established, he was offered a full commission to return to active duty to help.

He retired from the Air Force a full colonel in 1964. He and his dear wife, Julie, then spent the next 20 years on their farm near Great Cacapon, West Virginia, truly “almost heaven” for them. In 1983, they followed their son and daughter-in-law to Sarasota, Florida, where he promptly joined the Power Squadron and the Sarasota Yacht Club.

In 2003, both Julie and Jack moved to Bay Village, where he passed away on Aug. 5, 2018, at the age of 100.

He is preceded in death by his parents, John J. Daunt and Madeline Goeky Daunt; his wife, Julie Pearson Daunt of Melrose, North Carolina (2010); and his son, John J. Daunt III (2012).

He is survived by his daughter-in-law, Carol Daunt Pearson.

A celebration of life will be held at Bay Village at 2 p.m. on Aug. 16. A funeral Mass will be held at St. Michaels on Siesta Key at 11 a.m. on Aug. 22, followed by the internment at 2 p.m. at the Sarasota National Cemetery on Clark Road.

In lieu of flowers, Jack requested donations be made to Holy Cross College, 1 College St., Worcester, MA 01610.
