LANDRUM — A Landrum man died Monday after his moped crashed into a vehicle outside the city that evening, according to officials with the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

According to police, the crash occurred around 9 p.m. on South Blackstock Road near Highway 11, 4 miles south of the city of Landrum, when a moped, operated by 53-year-old Johnny Ray Page, of Landrum, crossed into the opposite lane while traveling south on the roadway. Page then crashed head-on into an oncoming 2007 Honda, operated by 28-year-old Ethan Rhodes, also of Landrum, who was heading north at the time.

Page, who was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:15 p.m., according to Spartanburg Coroner Rusty Clevenger, whose office assisted highway patrol. The cause of death is listed as closed head trauma, and has been ruled an accident.
