Polk County showed flashes of promise Wednesday during its first on-field action of the 2018 football season.

The Wolverines hosted Hendersonville, Cherokee and Southside, S.C. for the Wolverine Jamboree, a two-hour scrimmage in G.M. Tennant Stadium. An hour-long delay due to inclement weather provided the proceedings with an extended halftime some 45 minutes into the action.

With each offense running 10 plays per series, Polk County and Cherokee each scored once on two possessions against each other to open the evening. The Wolverines got a touchdown run from quarterback Avery Edwards to close their first 10-play possession, missing an opportunity for another score due to a turnover in the red zone. Edwards had a lengthy run prior to the turnover to highlight the drive.

Cherokee, the defending 1A state champion, got a touchdown run from senior Isaiah Evans to close its second possession.

Polk County then tallied first agsinst Hendersonville as Mitchell Yoder found a hole up the middle and ripped off a long touchdown run. Following the weather delay, Hendersonville used its short passing game to march downfield for a score, but the Wolverines gained revenge on the Bearcats’ second possession as Shane Parris intercepted a Hendersonville pass.

The Wolverines closed the evening with two series against an athletic Southside squad. Polk County again had a drive into the red zone stopped by a fumble and failed to score.

Polk County concludes its preseason schedule on Friday, traveling to Cherryville to face the Ironmen and Bessemer City in preseason play.

The Wolverines open the regular season on August 18 at Chase.
