Polk County-connected travel baseball team enjoys success in Cooperstown

The Southern Athletics 12U travel baseball squad, featuring a handful of Polk County connections, recently enjoyed a successful tournament at Cooperstown Dreams Park in New York.

The squad, led by Polk County head coach Robert Carter and featuring local players Alex Tipton and Lawson Carter, began the week in tournament play with 103 other teams from around the country.

The Athletics rolled through pool play with a 6-0 record, ranking fourth in the 104-team field and just one of 14 teams to go undefeated in pool action.

Pool play wins included a 22-1 rout of Sealtech, an Ohio-based squad, and another 22-1 thumping of Valley Venom, of Michigan.

Entering tournament play, Southern Athletics saw its week end with a 4-2 loss to WFBA Orange from Florida.

The Athletics, which also had players from Hendersonville, Canton, McDowell counties and Chesnee, South Carolina, and Gaffney, South Carolina, allowed just 16 runs in seven games while scoring 93 runs.
