Wolverines blank Madison in regular-season finale

Belen Akers scored two goals Friday to lead Polk County to a 2-0 victory over Madison in Western Highlands Conference soccer action in Marshall.
The win concluded Polk County’s regular season, the Wolverines finishing 11-7 overall, 8-2 in WHC play. Polk will learn its first-round 1A playoff opponent on Monday.
Akers snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the 43rd minute on a feed from Baylee Love. She scored again nine minutes later on an assist from Mireya Roman.
Willow Arkell made four saves in posting Polk County’s third consecutive shutout and eighth of the season.
In junior varsity play on Wednesday, Polk County handed Madison a 3-0 defeat. Scout Harmon, Caelan Gaul and Carolina Castillo all scored goals for the Wolverines in their season finale.
