St. Luke’s warning people to be cautious of scam call

Officials with St. Luke’s Hospital have issued an alert regarding a potential phone scam involving the hospital.

“St. Luke’s is a victim of ‘spoofing,’ or the fraudulent practice when communication is sent from an unknown source yet disguised as one known to the receiver,” said Amy Norville, vice president and compliance officer for St. Luke’s Hospital. “It appears on Caller ID that the call is coming from St. Luke’s Hospital. When answered, a recording directs the receiver to call another number for help and information on eliminating debt. In this case, the number on the recording is also a dedicated St. Luke’s Hospital phone number.”

St. Luke’s has alerted hospital security and the telephone service provider of this incident.

Norville said this spoofing incident was brought to her attention Friday from a member of this community, so St. Luke’s Hospital officials want to remind everyone to be alert, aware and avoid providing any personal information to an unknown caller.
