GREEN RIVER — A 20-year old man is suspected of drowning Saturday while kayaking in the Green River Narrows, according to the Polk County Sheriff’s Office.

Matthew Ray was kayaking with friends and got caught in the rapids, and is suspected of drowning. His exact cause of death has not yet been released.

The emergency call came in around 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Ray died at the scene after he was overcome by the force of the water and was unable to escape, officials explained.

His family has been notified, police said.

Ray was described as a very experienced kayaker. The man is at least the fourth person killed kayaking the narrows.

Although Ray’s death seems to be a freak accident because of his whitewater experience, the sheriff’s office is cautioning people to be vigilant and to use extreme caution during warm weather activities in Polk County.
