Wolverines close third after opening round of WHC golf tourney

Polk County’s boys golf team finished the opening round of the Western Highlands Conference tournament Tuesday in third place, just 16 strokes off the lead.

The Wolverines posted a team score of 364 in the first round held at Grassy Creek Golf & Country Club in Spruce Pine. That trails leader Mitchell’s 348 and Avery’s 361.

Mountain Heritage followed with a 385. Madison only had two golfers participate, and thus did not post a team score, while Owen has no team this season.

Polk County’s Dillon Overholt and Hunter Lynch each fired 89s to lead the Wolverines. Overholt and Lynch trail co-leaders Austin McGuire and Ty Pitman of Mitchell by five shots.

The final round of the tournament is set for Thursday at Tryon Country Club.
