The hat contest for the 72nd Block House Steeplechase meet was as popular as ever with approximately 50 or so ladies, girls and even a few gentlemen turning out in their best chapeaus for the competition. Landrum resident Isabella Sumner won the “most appropriate” for the children’s competition sporting a jaunty pink flamingo nestled in blue and white feathers. Alexis Bailey of Rutherfordton took second wearing a hat featuring an array of rainbow taffeta and large yellow and red flowers. Joy Davis and Reagan Alexander from Shelby, made a cute duo sporting matching top hats for third place.
