Charles “Charlie” James Sylvia

Charles “Charlie” James Sylvia, 65, of Columbus, North Carolina, passed away peacefully on April 17, 2018.

He was a much-loved artist, sculptor, inventor and sign maker/designer as the owner of “The Sign Shop” for many years in Tryon, North Carolina. You may still see many of his projects hanging in the area, including his well-known spaghetti and meatball sculpture in Tryon.  

He was a friendly face in the community, and will always be remembered for his many talents and kindness to others.

Charlie is survived by his children, Erin Carmichael, Hope Pittman, Sarah Haughey, Anthony Silvia, Karrie Ann Morris and Shannon Silvia; his grandchildren, Patrick Pittman Jr., Jayden Silvia, Benjamin Urban, Silas and Wyatt Stover; and extended family.

Our family would like to thank Hospice of the Carolina Foothills, The Smith Phayer Hospice House in Landrum, South Carolina, our father’s caregivers and many friends, as well as the Sanders Funeral And Cremation Service of Columbus, North Carolina.

In lieu of flowers, we ask for continued efforts to support the arts within our community and schools. Our father’s love for artistic creativity and exploration was inspiring to everyone.
