Helen Sweeney Costa, born in Staten Island, New York, in 1916, was the first-born child of Josephine Cappelletti and John Sweeney.
She had three brothers, Buddy (1918-1923), Thomas (1924-2005) and James (1930-2014).
Helen graduated from Barnard College, Columbia University, New York City, in 1937, with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
She married Joseph L. Costa (1913-2004) of Metuchen, New Jersey, in 1938. They had two children, Patricia, born in 1941, and Joseph, born in 1945.
Surviving include her daughter Patricia Costa Malone (Raymond 1934-2014) of Anderson, South Carolina; granddaughter, Katie Malone (Brad Fraedrick); great-grandson, Keene Fraedrick, 4-years old, all from Landrum, South Carolina. Helen is also survived by her son, Joseph Costa (Bridgid); granddaughter Maria Costa; grandson Matthew Costa (Amy); and great-grandsons, Nico Costa, 5, and Novi Costa, 3, all of California.
Helen was an elegant, sensitive, humorous and charming wife, mom and grandmom.
She loved to travel, entertain, dance and attend musical and theatrical performances. She enjoyed gardening, flower arranging and many crafting activities.
Helen was a good friend to many, who enjoyed her quick wit as well as her stylish, mannerly ways. She was always first in line to take care of her friends in need.
Healthy, delicious meals would appear at their doors almost before they knew they were sick!
As Helen’s health started to fail, she became a favorite with the staff at Tryon Estates. They could always depend on a smart remark or some playful teasing while caring for her.
She will be missed by all who knew her. God bless and keep you, dear Mom!
Memorials may be made to Hospice of the Carolina Foothills.
