As losses go, Polk County boys tennis coach Richard Davis could not have been happier Tuesday.

The Wolverines dropped a 5-4 decision to perennial area power T.C. Roberson on a chilly afternoon at Polk County, with the Rams building a 4-2 lead in singles play and earning a doubles point late in the match to clinch the team win.

That Polk County even had a shot during doubles play left Davis with a smile on his face despite the outcome.

“This match was sort of a measuring stick for us as a 1A team to see where we stack up,” Davis said. “That we had a chance to win during doubles is fabulous. To lose 5-4, I’m not happy to lose, but to play that close against a quality program like T.C. Roberson is great. That’s huge for us.”

Top seed Ryan Heider won a thrilling 11-10 (7-4) match over T.C. Roberson’s Noah Dohle for one of the Wolverines’ points in singles. Ethan Edwards earned the other point with a 10-4 win at No. 5 singles over Kishan Patel.

Polk’s No. 2 doubles team, Henry Monts and Payton Stott, claimed an 8-2 win while Heider and Henry Heider pulled out an 8-5 victory over Dohle and Ian Cowan for Polk’s final point.

“I’m excited going forward,” Davis said. “We hope to keep improving and getting some of our lower seeded players some more experience.”

Polk County is scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, traveling to Hendersonville.
