Polk County wrestlers will have to fight through the consolation bracket Saturday to earn a berth in the state 1A wrestling tournament.

Friday’s opening day of the 1A West Regional at Avery ended with all 11 Polk County wrestlers in the consolation rounds. Action in the tournament is slated to begin 8:30 a.m Saturday.

Three Polk County wrestlers – Triston Watkins, Dillon Knighton and Devin Panchyshyn – won their first-round matches on Friday,  before being stopped in the second round.

Another Wolverine, Hayden Shumate, suffered a 11-10 decision to Mitchell’s Jose Guardian.

The top four wrestlers in each class advance to next week’s state 1A tournament in Greensboro.
