James Crockett McPherson

James Crockett McPherson, 83, of Tryon, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2018.

He was born December 11, 1934 in Hannibal Missouri, the son, of Lacy and Frances McPherson. He received his bachelor of arts in history from the University of North Carolina in 1956, his bachelor of divinity degree from Union Seminary in Virginia in 1959, and his PhD in theology from Southern Baptist Seminary in Louisville in 1975.

In 1958 he married Nancy Barnes at Olney Presbyterian Church in Gastonia. They were happily married for 54 years.

Dr. McPherson was a Captain in the United State Army from 1967-1976 with active duty during 1967-1969. He served as a chaplain during this time and during this time did a tour of duty in Korea. He received his honorable discharge in 1976 and was awarded multiple Army Commendation Medals.

Dr. McPherson was head pastor at Tryon Presbyterian Church from 1983 until 1997. In 1998 he was named pastor emeritus at Tryon Presbyterian Church and held this position until he passed away. He held many other churches during his career.

In addition he served on the Polk County school board, he was on the board for Steps to Hope, served on the Polk County voting commission, and he served on the Morehead scholarship committee. After retiring he served Meals on Wheels for many years.

Jim had many interests including being an avid fly fisherman and a longtime runner. His first passion was learning and he read a very wide and diverse set of topics and authors.

He will be remembered for his stories, his commitment to the church, and his love for God.

Jim is survived by his son, Van and Diane McPherson of Taylorsville, NC; a daughter, Eric and Marty Payne of Bloomington, Illinois; and two grandchildren, CJ McPherson and Shannon Payne.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Nancy, and his mother and father.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, February 10th at 11:00 AM at Tryon Presbyterian Church followed by a reception in the fellowship hall.
