Polk County’s solid effort Wednesday needed just one more component – points.

The Wolverines kept pace with Owen throughout the first half, but ultimately couldn’t generate enough offense to stay with the Warhorses in dropping a 59-40 decision in Western Highlands Conference girls basketball action at Polk.

Owen (15-5, 3-3) helped its cause with nine 3-pointers, including four straight to open the game. The Warhorses built a 16-4 lead with 1:25 left in the first period thanks in large part to that outside barrage.

Polk County (1-17, 0-7) then stepped up its defensive pressure and held Owen scoreless for for almost seven minutes. The Wolverines, though, could only score eight points in those seven minutes, pulling within 16-12 before Owen closed the half on a 6-1 run to take a 22-13 lead at the break.

The Warhorses then tallied the first four points of the third period to up the margin to 13 points and kept the lead in double digits most of the second half.

Senior Autumn Owen scored 13 points and moved into second place on Polk County’s career scoring list. Owen now has 1,090 points in her four seasons, surpassing the 1,084 scored by Kim Staley in her distinguished career.

Ansley Lynch adding eight points and seven rebounds, with Rachael Davis scoring six points. Mariah Overholt added five points, with Kristen Hall scoring four points with six rebounds and four steals.

Bella Marino and Ava Marino each scored two points for Polk, which will celebrate Senior Night on Thursday in its regular-season home finale against Mountain Heritage.
