Polk County earned its first Western Highlands Conference dual match wrestling win of the season on Tuesday, defeating Avery 48-36 in a conference match in Newland. A wave of Avery forfeits helped give the Wolverines most of their points, but Polk County picked up a key victory at 182 pounds when James Smith pinned Austin Duncan. Brennon Worthington, Trey Thompson, Hayden Shumate, Blake Rackley, Devin Panchyshyn, Tristan Watkins and Evan Miller, pictured at right, all were match winners. Polk County forfeited just one weight class in the match. The win is the second for the Wolverines this season, joining a victory over Franklin in December. The Wolverines will compete in the WHC tournament on Friday at Avery. Polk County will then close its regular season on Monday with a home match against Asheville. (Submitted by PolkSports.com)
