Polk County First Responders to celebrate 30th anniversary

COLUMBUS – The Polk County First Responders will be celebrating its 30th anniversary soon.

There will be a dinner on Nov. 4 from 3-8 p.m. at the Harmon Field Cabin in Tryon.

The Polk County First Responders program began in January 1987 with 13 original members.

The program has now grown to between 125-150 members throughout the county. First responders are available in all six of Polk County’s Townships, including Columbus, Saluda, Tryon, Green Creek, Mill Spring and Sunny View.

The program started in 1986 at St. Luke’s Hospital with Kathy Hyatt and Dr. Charles T. Blomley, as well as other officials from the hospital. The program had its first EMT class in 1987 and officially started the program.

All past and present first responders are invited to the Nov. 4 dinner. Members planning to attend are asked to contact Penny Cochran at 828-899-9111 by Oct. 30 to rsvp.
