Frustration built upon frustration Wednesday night for Polk County’s boys soccer team.

The Wolverines pressured Avery throughout the second half of their Western Highlands Conference clash in G.M. Tennant Stadium, but could never get a breakthrough goal en route to a 1-0 loss to the Vikings.

Polk County (2-6-1, 0-2) had several scoring chances in the second half, including a late penalty kick, but could never find the back of the net despite controlling much of the action in the period.

“Possessions, it felt like we dominated, especially in the second half,” said Polk County head coach Josh Trejo. “We got shot after shot after shot, but it didn’t matter. We would hit a defender and just couldn’t get one to go into the net.”

Polk County played without four injured starters, but still kept the game scoreless until five minutes remained in regulation. At that point, just after Polk County goalkeeper Wilson Edwards flicked away an Avery shot from close range, Viking defender Nash Green came up for a corner kick and headed the ball just inside the right post for the game-winner.

“Our defense is not doing so bad,” Trejo said. “Our possessions are not doing so bad. But once we get into the attacking third of the field, that’s where we are struggling.”

Avery improved to 3-4 overall, 1-1 in WHC play with the win.

Polk County returns to action on Thursday, traveling to Shelby for a non-conference clash.
