Viola Betty Joyner

Viola Betty Joyner, 96, of Columbus, N.C. passed away on Sunday, Sept. 17, 2017 at Laurel Woods in Columbus, N.C.

Viola was the daughter of the late William and Annie May Cottrell. She enjoyed living on the family farm and had worked for the Brookland-Cayce School System and in retail sales. She loved canning vegetables, cooking for her family, and was very talented at crocheting. Viola loved babies and faithfully served as a Sunday School Teacher for young children for many years at St. Andrews Road Church of Christ in Columbia, S.C., where she also served as an Elders wife. After moving to Tryon, N.C. she became a member of Tryon Church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Alvin Joyner, who passed away in 2000. She was also preceded in death by two sisters and a brother.

Surviving are a son, Gene Joyner (Deborah) of Lynn, N.C.; a daughter, Libby Harvey (Brian) of Miami, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Susan Andrews, Deborah Caudle, Pamela Joyner, Michelle Jones, Allison Snyder, Jason Harvey, Lisa Suarez; twelve great grandchildren, and four great-great grandchildren. Also surviving are numerous nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 2017 from 6 – 7:30 p.m. at McFarland Funeral Chapel in Tryon, N.C.

A funeral service will be held at Shives Funeral Home in Columbia, S.C. on Thursday, September 21, 2017 at 2 p.m. with Pastor Jerry Senn and Pastor David Senn officiating with a visitation held prior to the service from 1 – 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

Interment will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens, Columbia, S.C.
