Polk commissioners to hold public officials conference Sept. 5

The Polk County Board of Commissioners set a work session for Tuesday, Sept. 5 at 6 p.m. to hold a public officials conference. Emergency management director Bobby Arledge told commissioners at its Aug. 21 meeting there are 15 requirements that have to be met by the state and one is to hold a public officials conference, where local officials will meet with the state emergency management.

Columbus approves bid to pave portion of Walker Street

Columbus Town Council approved a $23,550 bid for Stott’s Construction to pave a portion of Walker Street. The paving will be done from Paula Street to Peniel Rd. near the entrance to Holly Hill.

Columbus to give employees extra day of vacation to make up for July 4

Since Columbus employees don’t actually get a vacation day on July 4 because of the Fabulous Fourth of July celebration, Columbus Town Council decided to give employees another day of vacation to use whenever they wish. Columbus Town Council met Aug. 17 and approved the change to the town’s personnel policy.

Columbus looking into regulating advertising on benches

Columbus Town Council met Aug. 17 and heard from councilman Josh Denton that he wants to look into an ordinance to regulate advertising on benches in town. Council agreed they are an eyesore and directed the town attorney to look into how the town can regulate advertising on benches, particularly ones that are on town-owned sidewalks.
