Polk County wrapped up its preseason schedule Friday with a solid showing in scrimmage action against host Bessemer City and Cherryville.

The Wolverines first battled the host Yellow Jackets in a controlled scrimmage, with each team running 10 players from the 40-yard line.

Bessemer City outscored Polk County 5-3 in the series, with the Wolverines driving for a score on every possession under the direction of junior quarterback Avery Edwards. Senior starter Dillon Overholt sat out the evening due to an ankle injury suffered in Wednesday’s scrimmage with Hendersonville.

Elijah Sutton scored on the Wolverines’ first drive before Edwards hit tight end Markell Lipscomb on a crossing route on Polk’s second possession, with Lipscomb breaking free and racing to the end zone. Mitchell Yoder then scored on a short run for Polk’s final touchdown.

The Wolverines then faced Cherryville for a half in regular game conditions, dominating the Ironmen en route to a 28-0 showing.

Sutton broke a long run for a touchdown on the Wolverines’ first drive. Polk then forced a Cherryville punt, and the Wolverines quickly drove for another score. A long Edwards pass to Lipscomb led to a short Braden Miller touchdown run, with Luis Hernandez converting the extra point for a 14-0 lead.

After another punt, Polk again marched for a score, an Edwards-to-Dillon Knighton pass setting up a short Bryson Seay run, with Hernandez again good for a 21-0 lead.

Knighton then picked off a Cherryville pass and returned the theft for the Wolverines’ fourth score of the half. Following another Cherryville punt, Polk County drove to the Ironman 3 before the half ended.

Polk County opens its regular season on Friday, hosting Chase at 7:30 p.m. in G.M. Tennant Stadium.
