Mack E. Wise of Mill Spring, N.C. passed away Thursday afternoon, June 22, 2017 while under hospice care at Autumn Care of Saluda, N.C.  

Mack grew up in Polk County. He attended Mill Spring School and joined the U.S. Navy for a short time in 1962. Mack was in his true form as a mountain man during his younger years. He was very knowledgeable of various edible plants and other sources of nutrition within the Blue Ridge Mountains.  

Mack’s last wishes were to be cremated and his ashes be scattered in the Blue Ridge Mountains. Mack will be sorely missed by his family and close friends.  

Surviving are two brothers, Jack Wise (Estelle) of Greenville, S.C. and Lee Wise (Cathy) of Lompoc, Calif.; two sisters, Betty Williams of Dobson, N.C. and Barbara Giles of Sanford, N.C.  

He was preceded in death by a brother, Joe and a sister, Shirley.  

A memorial service will be held at a later date.
